Nathan's 18 month checkup

Today was Nathan's 18 month checkup.  He weighs 21 pounds, 10 ounces, and is 31 inches tall.  His head circumference is 49 cm.  This places him in the 10-25th percentile for height, the 5th percentile for weight, and the 75-90th percentile for head circumference.

The doctor is a little concerned with Nathan's weight because he has lost weight since his 15 month checkup.  He's actually a little under what he was at his 1 year appointment.  But she did acknowledge that he has a very high level of activity, which she noticed during the appointment.  He never stops moving, always climbing, running, dancing, moving anyway he can!  So for now we are going to just encourage him to eat more protein.  He has grown an inch taller so he is definitely growing.

Nathan is a very healthy little guy, and reaching all his milestones for this age.  He knows at least 20 words, and few of which I forgot in my last post.  He knows "book" and "bug" and just today he has learned "yes" and "please."  I'm so glad that he has learned yes and I'm hoping to give him many opportunities to say it instead of his almost constant "no."

Tomorrow I'm going to attempt to get some pictures of the kids in bluebonnets, so keep your fingers crossed they turn out!  And a little update on Emma: she recently counted to 100 all by herself!

Nathan is 18 months old!

Today Nathan is 18 months old!  He continues to grow into the sweetest little boy!  He cut two more teeth this past month, his bottom two first year molars.  So only 8 teeth to go, 4 canines and 4 second year molars and we will be done with baby teething!

Nathan has a few more words, like plane, thank you (sounds like "nan knew") and bug.  He likes to say "no" and "mine", much to my frustration.  He loves to give goodnight hugs and kisses and tells us "nite-nite" at bed time.

We play outside quite a bit these days, and he notices every airplane and tweeting bird.  He also notices the ants and roly polies and loves to watch them.  I do have to be careful that he's not getting into fire ants, they seem to be everywhere since the last rain.

Nathan knows quite a few animals sounds now.  Of course he's know "moo" and "bock-bock" for a while, but now he growls for a lion or tiger.  It's really the cutest growl I've ever hear!

Next week Nathan has his 18 month checkup and I'll post his height and weigh then.

Nathan is 17 months old!

Today Nathan is 17 months old!  Where have the days gone??  Nathan is saying a few more words.  He says "de-de" for kitty, and can make correct animal sounds for cow, chicken, duck, pig, sheep, horse, dog, cat and even elephant and tiger!  He says "zide" for outside, and "ni-ni" for goodnight.

His10th tooth cut through on Feb. 18, the top left molar.  So we are half way to Nathan having all 20 baby teeth!

Nathan loves to play with his cars and trains and makes the cutest sounds to accompany the vehicles.  He also has several pull toys and he loves these!  He walks backwards so he can see the toy that's following him.  He has a wooden alligator and a circus train.  We also have a pull puppy but he's not really into that one, it doesn't pull along the carpet very well.

A typical day for Nathan begins about 6:20, when he wakes up and climbs all over me to wake me up!  We come downstairs quickly and quietly so we don't wake up Emma.  Nathan plays or watches a show while I try to wake up.  Nathan really is not a breakfast eater.  He might have some Cherrios or other cereal about 8. If it's a school day for Emma we take her at 9am, then usually come home to play.  He'll have a snack about 10am and then he takes his nap about 11:30.  Usually he will sleep for 1.5-2 hours, then he'll eat lunch after his nap.  We have to pick up Emma from school at 1pm, and then we try to play outside if the weather is nice. Nathan loves to be outside.  Sometimes we are outside for 2-4 hours, and we'll still be playing when Tony gets home.  Nathan likes to play with chalk, and still tries to eat it quite a bit.  He also has a little ride on toy outside and Emma's old tricycle.  In the backyard we have the swing set and toddler climber, and the sandbox, so he has fun back there too.  We usually eat supper about 5:30 or 6pm, then bedtime is at 7pm.  Nathan is usually asleep by 7:20.

We just love our little Nathan so much!  He's a joy and makes us all so happy!

Nathan is 16 months old!

Last Tuesday, Jan 24, Nathan turned 16 months old!  I apologize for the long break in posting news and pictures, January was a very busy month.  My thoughts are a bit jumbled so I'm going to just write a few short notes about Nathan.

He's such a little ham these days.  He loves to play outside, dig in the dirt, play hide and seek, and go down the slide.  He loves to chase Emma when she rides her bike and just run in circles on the driveway.  He still eats chalk but will also sit down and make some chalk marks on the driveway.

He's got a few new teeth.  His bottom lateral incisors came in on December 25 (right side) and January 9 (left side).  On January 28 I noticed that a molar on the top right had cut through.  All his gums are very swollen and I hope the remaining molars come through quickly, they have really been hurting him.

Nathan says "bye" and waves bye-bye now.  He gives kisses sometimes, by pouting out his lower lip.  And his hugs are still the best, he squeezes my neck so hard!  He also says "dada", and I think he might be close to saying Emma's name.  A few days ago he said something that sounded like "Ammmma" so I thought he might be trying to say "Emma".  Here's a comprehensive list of all the words he can say (at least the ones I can remember): mama, dada, ball, duck, dog, bye.

He loves books and loves to have books read to him.  He especially loves books with animals and he can correctly identify a dog, cat, chicken, pig, sheep, duck and cow in several of our farm animal books.  He is still using baby signs and now signs for "book" in addition to "more" and "all-done".

He's just a little sweetie and we are so lucky to have him!

Nathan is 14 months old!

Happy Thanksgiving!  Today Nathan is 14 months old!  One word I can use to describe Nathan these days is 'busy'!  I forgot how completely absorbed that toddlers are in their play. He loves to be outside and play in the sand box, climb on the toddler slide and ride on a tricycle.  He can't reach the pedals yet so Mommy pushes him along.  He enjoys chewing on chalk but he will also sit down on the ground and mark with it on the driveway.  He picks flowers, tries to eat acorns, and will take off running down the sidewalk, swinging his right arm as vigorously as he can!

He is not talking yet but he has a great understanding for what we tell him.  He has quickly learned how to climb onto the couch and rocking chair, and that's when he hears "please sit down Nathan" from me.  He knows what I'm asking him but he just can't listen, he loves to stand up and be as tall as he can!

On Sunday, 11/20, Nathan's 6th tooth finally came in, on the top right.  So he has 4 across the top and 2 on the bottom still.  I assume he's still teething because he is always chewing on his fingers and he's been trying to bite me the last few days.  He opens his mouth and puts it on my leg or arm and looks at me, as if he's saying "are you gonna let me do this"?  Of course I tell him that we have toys for biting and give him one of those.

Nathan loves apples and grapes, and crackers.  He still won't eat meat, beans, bread, eggs, most veggies or cheese. Sometimes he will eat yogurt, pasta, or broccoli, but not always.  I hope he starts to eat more foods soon, it can be frustrating to feed this kid!

Nathan is 13 months old!

Today Nathan is 13 months old!  He's such a sweet and happy little toddler!  He loves to be outside and play in the sand box, or just walk down the sidewalk.  I've been taking the kids for walks in the stroller and he really enjoys it.  It's nice to finally have some good weather to be outside.

He's obsessed with getting up on the couch and anytime I sit down, he's crying for me to put him up on the couch.  When I do set him up there, he gets the biggest grin and runs to the end, where he tries to dive over the arm rest.  I catch him by the ankle before he goes over of course!  Most of the time I sit on the floor just to avoid that whole scene.  I forgot how exhausting a toddler can be!  I can't load or unload the dishwasher if he's awake, and I have to keep all the bathroom doors shut at all times!  He loves to play in the tupperware/plastics cabinet in the kitchen, so it's always a mess from him getting the stuff out.

Nathan's interest in solid food seems to be waning.  I'm getting a little frustrated with him, he won't even try most foods now.  He just pushes it away or smears the food on his tray.  I hope this is just a phase and maybe related to the extreme teething pain he's dealing with now.  He must have the slowest moving teeth ever!  He's got three on the top that have broken through the gum but they aren't fully descended yet.  One more is about to break through, and then he'll have 6.  Still 14 more teeth to go, and I'm not looking forward to the molars or canines.
Nathan received two ride-on toys for his birthday, and he's really loving them.  He is getting really good at getting on and off on his own, and he loves to stand on the seat and point and talk to us.  He can make the car go backwards by pushing his feet, but he's not yet discovered how to go forward.

Nathan is learning to brush his teeth.  He mostly just chews on the brush but I'm trying to get the routine established of brushing before bedtime.  We'll add mornings when he has more teeth!

Nathan is such a snuggler and loves to give hugs!  He loves to hug Emma and roll around with her on the floor.  He's talking more and more, although he doesn't know any real words yet.  His comprehension is great, he understands many of the things we tell him.  He's sweet, smart and we love him so much!

Nathan's 12 month checkup

Last Tuesday on 9/27 was Nathan's 12 month checkup.  He is 29 inches tall (25th percentile for height), 21 pounds and 15 oz (25th-50th percentile for weight), and his head circumference is 48cm (90th percentile).  He did very well with the doctor and she said "he's advanced", which we all knew already!

He is really starting to make more sounds and has started to say "da", and "doe".  I love to listen to his babbling and wonder what he's thinking.  He loves to get into his little red wagon and stand or sit in it.  He loves his football and he's really into stealing the phone or TV remote when he can get them!

I'm trying to get Nathan to drink whole milk from a cup.  After his first taste he gave me a look of such betrayal!  Since then he's refusing to even sip it, he some how knows if the cup has milk or water.  He's still not very interested in eating solid food regularly, although tonight he actually ate broccoli and pasta and really loved both!

It's about time!

Finally Nathan's 3rd tooth has cut through his gum!  The top left tooth is finally erupting.  It seems like these top teeth are taking forever to come in.  I could tell the last few days that the pain was really bothering Nathan so I hope this will give him some relief!

Nathan is 1 year old!

Happy Birthday Nathan!

Today our little man turns one year old! He's such a joy to us all, and we love him so much!

Nathan is starting to talk more, making more sounds and generally being a more vocal baby.  He still adores Emma and loves to hug her.  He's also starting to show his feelings when he doesn't like something happening.  He's good at growling and is now hitting things, us included.  I'm trying to use this as a learning experience for Emma.  If she's always pushing and knocking him over and generally not being gentle, then that is what Nathan is going to learn.  So when she knocks him down and then he gets up and screams and hits her back, well, then she needs to think about she treats him.  We are of course working on it and I know this is the beginning of a trying phase, toddlerhood, but the good and great moments are all around us, if we can stop to appreciate them.

Nathan is still learning to feed himself.  He just really doesn't have a huge interest in solid foods yet.  He does love blueberries and he's even eaten a few bites of grilled cheese sandwich.  I've offered him scrambled eggs but he had no interest, would not even touch them.  Some days he will eat a few bites of whatever we are having, but still there are more days when he just shoves the food around and drops it on the floor.  He still nurses for most of his nourishment and I don't see that changing until he gets more teeth (he still has only two on the bottom) and shows more interest in food.  The top front four teeth in his mouth are so swollen and I can see the outline of his teeth under the gum.  The last few days have been rough and I hope these teeth cut through soon!  He does drink very well out of a cup with a straw.  He loves water and will carry his cup around under his arm!

He's an expert walker now, and really wants to climb onto the couch.  He's not quite there yet though.  He's really interested in being outside, and we would go out more if it wasn't still hot, plus he is putting everything in his mouth.  He gets upset when I'm constantly taking rocks and leaves out of his hands and mouth.  He loves the pool and bathtub and he's so much fun to watch splashing around.  He still sits in his bathtub seat, otherwise he's a slippery little fella trying to climb and walk around the bathtub!

He loves to play up stairs in our play room, and he watches the gate carefully.  Once he got out when the gate was left open.  By the time I realized it, he had crawled up on his own and was playing by himself!  He loves dogs and our cat Chloe.  He stands at the back door and talks to her while she eats her breakfast.

The only word that Nathan really says is Mama.  Mostly he says this when he's crying for me.  He does understand quite a bit.  I can ask him to find certain toys, like the car, ball, cow, and keys, and he can find them and bring them to me.  I really want him to learn to say Emma's name so I repeat that too him a lot, along with Daddy too of course.  If I tell him that we're going upstairs to play he will immediately go to the gate, ready to crawl up!

We are so blessed to have our little Nathan Tyler in our family!  We love him and treasure him everyday.  Thank you Lord for our little boy!

Nathan is 11 months old!

Today Nathan is 11 months old! The big news is that he is walking! He took his first steps in early August and by the middle of the month he was getting around everywhere! He loves to walk, and even when he falls down he gets right back up and keeps going. He does still crawl quite a bit and he has even crawled up our stairs, with mommy very close by his side.

We've discovered that Nathan loves dogs! He just can't get enough of them. Our neighbors have a very old lab and he is so gentle and lets Nathan grab and touch and climb on him. Whenever we see a dog out for a walk Nathan starts to point and tries to climb off my lap or jump out of my arms to get to the dog.

He has an adorable smile and the sweetest laugh! He loves his sister Emma! He just wants to be near her and see whatever she's doing. He is starting to give hugs and they are so sweet to receive. He's waving now and when he hears us telling Daddy goodbye in the mornings, he starts waving his cute little hands.

Nathan loves to hang upside down. I do this carefully by leaning him backwards while he is sitting on my lap. I hold his arms and lower him to the ground. Then I pull him back up into a sitting position. He loves it so much that he will start to lean himself back, his way of telling me to lower him backwards. Sometimes I'll even do a flip with him and he loves that too. He likes to swing too, but we haven't been outside to swing much this summer, it's just too hot. We have gone to pool a few times and he loves the water! When it's bath time I still put Nathan in his bath seat, but it doesn't hold him for long. He usually tries to climb out within 5-10 minutes so then I have to take him out. He is just too wild in the bathtub and won't sit still.

Nathan still only has two teeth but I hope any day now the top front 4 will come through and give him some relief. I can feel them just below the gum, and he has been so fussy for weeks due to teething. He's learning to feed himself much better and loves to drink water from his straw cup. He eats yogurt, pears, avocados, meat, sweet potatoes, cheese, and beans. After he turns one I will introduce eggs and fish.

He is starting to vocalize a few more sounds, but no real words yet. The closest is 'mama', but he usually says "mama mama mama" a few times in a row, not just the one word yet. We can see the cute little person he's growing into, and we can't wait to get to know him better as his personality emerges more each day.

Nathan is 10 months old!

Today Nathan is 10 months old! He is really growing so fast! He can walk along the couch and around the kitchen table by holding onto the chairs. He can stand alone without support for several minutes. He is making more sounds and talking more these days. He knows what a ball is and can crawl to it when I ask him where is the ball. He can say "ba" for ball. He also likes to point his finger at toys and people.

He loves to take baths and go to the pool. He splashes and laughs and has a great time. He still has only two teeth but seems to be working on more. He still takes 2 naps a day, and sleeps about 12 hours at night.

He loves his big sister Emma. When she dances he gets so excited that he starts to pivot around in a circle, it is so cute! I hope to get a video of it soon. I did get his pictures taken at 9 months and they turned out really well. I will try to post them as well, when I get some time at the computer and can scan them in.

At his 9 month checkup Nathan weighed 21 pounds and 15 ounces, and was 28 inches tall. This is 1 inch shorter and 1 pound lighter than Emma was at 9 months, yet to me he seems so much bigger and heavier! We are so lucky that he is healthy and growing so well!

Nathan is 9 months old!

Today our baby Naters is 9 months old! He's crawling fast and furious, pulling up on everything, making lots of new sounds, and I predict he'll be taking steps along the furniture by 10 months! He is still wearing 9-12 month sized clothing, but not for long I think.

He's getting better at picking up pieces of food and feeding himself. He really does not like to be spoon fed so I try to give him pieces of whatever we are eating. He loves avocado, and has tried potatoes, chicken, beef, bananas, and pasta. He also enjoys cheerios and a few bites of yogurt when he'll tolerate the spoon. He's started drinking from a straw and is doing well with that.

His second tooth came in June 13, on the bottom center right. At a recent doctor visit on June 10, he weighed 21 pounds, 2 ounces! He had his 3rd ear infection over Memorial weekend in May so this visit was a follow up. His ears are clear and will hopefully stay that way!

We now have the large fence up around the TV, and he pulls up on it regularly. He's explored the kitchen well and can get into the tupperware cabinet. I've also had to put the trash can in the pantry because he insists on pulling up on it and it is not sturdy enough for him. He loves to sit at the back door and look out the window at Chloe cat. Since he's on the floor everywhere now, I've increased sweeping the kitchen from "almost never" to "almost weekly". Most of the stuff on the floor Nathan dropped himself, but that doesn't mean he needs to eat it days later!

He loves to watch Emma and be near her, whatever she is doing. This is leading to Nathan crawling into Emma's area of play and disrupting her toys. She does get frustrated with him, but overall she is a good big sister and helps me by playing, entertaining, and sometimes distracting Nathan. We all love him so much, and we are so blessed to have our baby Naters!

Nathan is 8 months old!

Today Nathan is 8 months old! He is crawling all over and pulling up in his crib, on tables, chairs, couches, the bathtub and even myself and Emma if she stands still long enough. He says 'mama' and 'ba', 'da', and 'de'. He usually takes 2 good naps a day, but I very often hold him for at least one of the naps. This ensures that I actually get to sit down for a good rest myself and he usually sleeps better.

He had an ear infection last month and seems to be suffering from the same allergies that Emma has. He has a lot of congestion and drainage but he's still so happy. He finally cut one tooth (bottom front left) and I think more are on the way, because he's still drooling and chewing on everything. He's also lost interest in eating solid foods, at least being spoon fed. He wants big pieces he can feed himself, but I'm giving him tiny pieces since he doesn't have teeth to chew up food. He loves the teething biscuits but still has trouble picking up small pieces of food or cereal.

Nathan has discovered how to blow bubbles and will sometimes give raspberries to me. He's ticklish all over and laughs when I blow in his ears. He really loves to stand up and he can clap his hands too. He loves to splash water in the bathtub and chew on his duckies. If Emma gets her hair to close, he will grab it and hold on tight. Emma can still make him laugh and she does often.

He's really growing fast and is such a happy, delightful baby. We love him so much!

Nathan is 7 months old!

Today Nathan is 7 months old! It's been a big month for Nathan, full of lots of milestones. Just after he turned 6 months, the constant spitting up slowed and then stopped! He almost never spits up anymore. Just 6 days ago we stopped his medication for reflux and he is doing great without it! It's such a relief to no longer have to give him the medicine, timing it between feedings and sleep.

He is now sitting up without support and crawling on his belly. Twice he's gone from laying down to sitting up, but I have not yet seen him do it. One minute he's on his back or belly, then I turn away and then back, and he's sitting up! He's also clapping his hands, and banging toys together.

We bought a new car seat/booster seat for Emma and have moved Nathan into her old car seat, as Nathan has outgrown the infant carrier. He is so much happier in the bigger seat, he has not cried once in it!

A few days ago he came down with an ear infection, and was running a temperature of 104. So we went to the dr and he weighs 20 pounds, 5 ounces! He hates the antibiotic they gave him and spits most of it out. His fever is gone but he's still not feeling too well. His teeth are really hurting him, he's drooling and chewing on everything.

He's crawled into the kitchen once, and through the office, so we have put up one gate to keep to him off the stairs. He can get up on all fours, and rock back and forth, but hasn't yet mastered crawling this way. He's still pulling and pushing himself along on his tummy.

We have started solid foods and he seems to like them. We started with rice cereal, and he's also tried peas and avocado. So far he likes them all. So far I am only buying the baby cereal. I've made the peas and avocado puree myself. It does take time but it's so much less expensive. I think next we'll try carrots and green beans, whenever I get around to making them!

He babbles quite a bit and can say "mama". He also says "da". He's developed a very high pitch scream when he gets upset, but thankfully that's not too often (mostly just when I leave his sight). He's generally a very happy, smiling baby, as his sister was before him. He loves Emma and she can still make him laugh better than anyone. When we are in the car, he just stares at her. Anytime he's crying she will sing to him, making up some pretty imaginative songs. We see a beautiful sibling relationship developing and we know we are so blessed to have them both!

Nathan's 6 month well check

Today was Nathan's 6 month well check. He is doing great, perfectly healthy and happy! He weighs 19 pounds, 9 ounces (I predicted 19 1/2 pounds so I was off by an ounce) which is the 90th percentile still. His head circumference is 44 cm, in the 50th percentile. He grew in height and is now 26 inches long, in the 25th percentile!

The dr. said his lower gums are red and swollen so maybe he'll be cutting some teeth soon! He did receive a flu vaccination, and two other vaccines for various other diseases. He only cried a few minutes with the shots.

After talking with the dr. about Nathan's reflux, we have decided to finish out the current bottle of Prilosec and then see how he does without the medication. If he starts experiencing pain again with his reflux we can always start the medication again, but it would be wonderful if he has outgrown the need.

It's also time to start some solid foods for Nathan. I'm pretty reluctant about starting solids for a few reasons:

1. I'm lazy. Solid food is a bit more work than just lifting up my shirt to feed him!
2. It's messy and I don't need more dishes or clothes or kids to clean (see #1).
3. It's not like the boy needs more food, I can barely carry him!

But anyway, we'll try to get some solids going soon. He's really starting to move around on the floor a lot, not really crawling with purpose but rolling, pushing and pulling himself along. He's wearing mostly 9 and 12 month sized clothing now.

Nathan is 6 months old!

Today Nathan is 6 months old! He's such a happy, good baby. He's rolling over, sitting up for a few seconds without support, sitting up much longer with support, grabbing at toys, and pushing himself along the floor with his feet. He loves to grab his feet and roll from side to side on his back. He has also found his tongue and loves to stick it out and suck on it. He's always smiling and he's really finding his voice now. He loves to talk and scream at us, in the happiest of ways. He also has discovered that he can move his arms up and down pretty fast and he's enjoying smacking them against the floor, himself, and mostly me as I carry him.

He's napping about 3-4 times a day. Usually he will have one good nap from 1-2 hours and the rest are 30-45 minute cat naps. Overnight he is still a great sleeper, usually going to sleep about 8 and not waking until 4 or 5am to nurse. Then he's back to sleep until about 7.

He is still taking medication for reflux and he still spits up quite a bit. I'm still cutting out diary and soy and I think it has really helped him, because he has stopped the almost constant groaning noises he used to make and his tummy doesn't seem to be hurting him anymore.

Nathan really, really loves Emma. He watches her all the time, and she can't wait to play with him. Every time we get in the car to go somewhere, she will put her little stuffed Bevo in his lap and say "Nathan can have my Bevo, so he won't be lonely". She is so sweet with him and loves him so much.

We've got two great kids and we are so thankful!
