She's on the move!

Today Emma decided to climb to the top of our stairs (15 steps in all)!! I was right there with her the whole time, and she just went straight to the top without stopping! She also took 3 small steps towards Tony and I on two separate occasions! I still think it will be a while before she can walk confidently and abandon crawling.

Emma is 1 year old!

Happy Birthday Emma!

Today our little Emma turned 1 year old. What an amazing and wonderful year this has been! We have truly been blessed with a joyful, happy little girl! We celebrated Emma's birthday with family and a few friends. All of Emma's grandparents were there, and her Aunt Jessica and Uncle Leland. I made Emma's cake, vanilla, and with my mom's help we decorated it into Winnie-the-Pooh. I also made a small round cake for Emma to play with and eat. Emma had a great time and really enjoyed her cake! She made a nice mess all over her face but somehow managed to avoid getting icing in her hair!

This past year has just been so incredible. She has grown so fast, and is now taking a few small steps. She took her first step on Christmas Eve, and on Saturday (12/27) she took two steps together on two separate occasions. She will also now walk around the room while holding onto your hands or fingers. She has been able to stand alone for about 5-30 seconds at time for the last few weeks. She's really working on her balance and I think she'll be walking by the end of January.

She's eating more real food and feeding herself more. She enjoyed ham, dressing, sweet potatoes, and peas for her Christmas dinner. She still loves toast and loves to eat real bananas now. She also tried avocado for the first time this month and seemed to enjoy it quite a lot.

She loves to talk on the phone! Everything has become a phone, from just her hand to any toy. She holds it up to her ear and says "huh!" which is her "hello." She also says "ba" for ball, and has been really working on her 'g' sound. She's says lots of things that sound like "guth", "gath", "gooth" and "goth." I believe that she also says "I love you" in her own little way. When I ask for a hug she gives it, arms around my neck and sometimes she pats my back. She also starts talking in a sweet little voice and to me it just sounds like she's whispering "I love you" in baby coos. It's so sweet and makes me feel so happy! She will also give you a wet kiss if you ask for it!

Emma Sees Santa

Today Emma saw Santa for the first time at the Barton Creek mall. We got there pretty early, and only had to wait in line for about half an hour. A little girl thought Emma was really cute and waved to her, and the woman behind us (whose son was two) regaled us with sordid tales of having to work at a car manufacturing plant for 7 years before being laid off, and how that prepared her for raising a boy because they said raunchy things all the time, so now she knows how men think. So apparently standing in line hasn't changed much since the cafeteria in grade school.

Emma was unsure at first about Santa, and for a couple seconds was ready to flee the scene of the crime, but once she looked at Mommy and Daddy smiling at her from the side she just turned back and studied Santa's face and beard intently, then would turn and smile to Mommy and Daddy as they exclaimed, "See, it's Santa Claus!"

Emma ended up doing great, asking for a giant boob of unending milk, a cat with no legs so it can't flee when she tries to pet/skin it, and to never have to wear socks again. Ever. Oh, and Santa told me afterwards she whispered for an official Red Ryder carbine action two-hundred shot range model air rifle with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time.

Mommy said she'll shoot her eye out. We're all going to have to talk about that.

Emma is 11 months old!

Friday Emma turned 11 months old! She is such a happy girl! She's learned to wave hello and goodbye, blow kisses, and give hugs. A hug from Emma feels so great! She is still pulling up on furniture, and taking a few steps while holding on, but she is not close to walking alone.

She loves to read books, and can hold the book and turn the pages. She points to the pages and talks about what she sees. She can say 'ba' for ball, 'look', and mama and dada.

She really enjoyed her first Thanksgiving. She traveled from Austin to West, Lindale, and a few places in between. Both sets of grandparents were able to spend lots of time with Emma, and she also visited several great-aunts and uncles, and even some great-great aunts and uncles. Everyone loved to see her and told us how beautiful and happy she is!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Emma is 10 months old!

Today Emma is ten months old! She is such a happy baby! She loves to be outside now that the weather has turned so beautiful the last few weeks. She loves to read and she will sit with her books and open them and turn the pages. She talks to the books and her other toys too. She likes to crawl under the kitchen table and hide, and then come crawling out as fast as she can, laughing the whole time. She’s learning to feed herself with her hands, and she prefers that to being fed with a spoon. She’s also now sleeping for 11 hours straight at night!! I never thought that would happen! She is also taking a lot of steps while holding onto the furniture. She says ‘mama’ and ‘dada’ and ‘kidy’, which I think means kitty. I have taught her how to do a back flip off my lap. She loves it! I tell her “want to do a flip?”, and she immediately starts to lean to back. I hold her hands and her legs go over her head and then she hops to the ground! Then she crawls up to my lap and wants to do it again.

I want to take this opportunity to record some of Emma’s nicknames that we have used in the last 10 months. The first one was Baby Poots of course, which our family blog is named after. We also called her Bean Bean before she was born, based on her shape during the first ultrasound. Once she arrived and we named her, Emmerkins became the nickname of choice. And then when we had so many problems learning to breastfeed (both Emma and I) I came up with “Little Miss Milk Maid” and “Little Miss Milky La Rue” to help me get through each feeding session. I know she will love those in about 13 years!

I really liked the “La Rue” and sometimes call her “Emmerkins La Rue”. There are also Emmers and Emmer-fish. I made a whole rhyme for Emmer-fish, she’s my little Emmer-squish, she’s my little Emmer-dish. Then Tony created “Boutros Boutros-Ghali Girl”. I don’t know how he came up with it, but we started singing it to Emma and it would always get a smile and stop the tears. Boutros Boutros-Ghali was the Secretary-General of the UN in the 1990’s. I know it’s weird but it sounds so catchy and it really did make Emma smile. In the first few months of her life she would have very fussy evenings, crying for hours, and singing “Boutros Boutros-Ghali Girl” just worked. I am sure that I am leaving some out, but I’ll include them next time!

291!

Emma is 291 days old today! I carried her for 268 days and now we have past that number of days with her here. Yesterday she took a few steps while holding onto the side of the bathtub. Today she took a few more steps while holding onto the couch. I still think it will be a few months before she takes any steps on her own.

Emma is 9 Months Old!

Sunday Emma turned 9 months old! Our baby is quickly approaching toddlerhood and we can see the little girl she is becoming. She’s a very happy girl, full of smiles, giggles, and lots of hugs and kisses.

Bath time has become very challenging. She wants to sit up and grab everything! Gone are the days of her laying happily in the tub, content to just kick her legs! She turns over, crawling around the tub, it’s really scary because I’m afraid she will hit her face or head against the tub. It’s time to get out the tub chair, I hope Emma likes it!

Tuesday we went to the pediatrician for her check-up. Here are her stats:

Weight: 23 pounds, 97th percentile
Height: 29 inches, 95th percentile
Head circumference: 90th percentile

Emma can now eat meat, cheese and yogurt, so we will be starting some new things soon. She is pulling up on everything, but so far she’s not taking any steps. She did manage to crawl up onto a paper box, which has since been removed from her reach! She is learning to pet the kitties gently, with our help. She loves Sesame Street, and anything that has music. She likes to dance to the music; her little booty shaking to the beat is the cutest thing! She also loves other babies and children, she smiles and laughs and tries to grab any babies she is near.

What Emma is watching: Sesame Street’s 25th Birthday: A Musical Celebration
What Emma is listening to: Giggly, Wiggly, Silly Songs, Vol. 1 & 2
What Mommy is reading to Emma: Baby Animals, Hippos Go Berserk, The Runaway Bunny

The kitties are no longer safe! Saturday morning Emma decided that she wanted to crawl anywhere and everywhere, and she has been! The kitties are starting to get the picture that the floor is no longer safe and they are retreating under tables and to the tops of the couches. Emma is so happy that she can crawl!

We are so proud of her, but it's a scary new world now!

Emma is 8 months old!

Thursday Emma turned 8 months old! She is do so many things and changing so much these days!

In the last month, she has learned to push up into a sitting position on her own, and she is getting around everywhere! Last Saturday she crawled a bit in the traditional manner, on her hands and knees. But mostly she gets around by doing her own move that we call the “Sit and Spin”. She leans forward on her hands and then spins her body around and sits back down, ending up facing a completely different direction. She does this all around the room and can get just about anywhere. She’s crawling after the kitties, and has even caught them a few times and grabbed some fur. Today she cornered Anya and Anya hissed at her, but didn’t scratch her, thankfully!

Emma's first tooth finally pushed through on Friday. She was chewing on everything, even her own hand, so that I decided to feel in her mouth, and I felt the tooth poking out. She won't sit still and let me look at it, but it's there. She’s eating more solid food, and really enjoys almost everything. She’s not crazy about prunes though!
