Happy Birthday Emma!
Today Emma is four years old!!
We celebrated her birthday early on the 17th with friends and family at Emma's favorite bouncy place. Today we are home and celebrating together. We told her the story of the day she was born and watched some of her "Emma movies", home movies made by her Grandpa Smith.

Christmas cars
Nathan received a nice assortment of cars and trucks for Christmas, and he loves playing with them. Especially as he perches on top of this Christmas storage box!

Nathan is 15 months old!
Today Nathan is 15 months old!
He had his 15 month check up on Tuesday and he weighs 22 pounds, 6 ounces and is 30 inches tall. This puts him in the 25th percentile for weight and height. His head circumference is 48 cm, and that's in the 75th percentile. He's very healthy and doing great. He loves to climb, run, dance and just move as much as possible! He loves to climb into the kitchen chairs and onto the table. He'd rather sit in a big chair at the table than in his booster seat. He loves music and will dance around with Emma and just have a great time.
He has a few words in addition to mama and ba (ball). He says da for dog, he's said duck various times for different ducks that he sees, and he's said apple once, while eating an apple during snack time. I'm trying to teach him body parts and he definitely know 'nose' and sometimes 'eye'.
Nathan rarely sleeps in his crib, he just hates it. So for nap time he sleeps in his room on a foam mattress on the floor. At night he goes bed on his mattress but then between 10 and 11 he wakes up and I bring him to bed with us. I am thinking we may toss the crib soon and get a toddler bed.
Nathan usually wakes up between 6:30 and 7:00 am. He usually wakes up very happy. We spend our mornings playing, taking Emma to school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and sometimes running errands. He loves to play outside. He just wants to walk off down the sidewalk and see the world. He holds his left arm up a bit and swings his right arm with such gusto!
We love our little guy so much! Merry Christmas Eve!

...and Now a Break from Your Regularly Scheduled Broadcast
Hey everybody, this is Tony. I rarely ever write on here, largely because I'm a smartass, and think that someday my kids will be reading this...maybe even when they're 60. Lately, I've been thinking that I should be writing here more often, because I'm a smartass and someday my kids may be reading this when they're 60.
Of course, they'll also be reading it when they're 10...17...25...and so on. I start freezing up thinking of all the things I want to tell them, since what I want to say differs depending on the time they read this. It largely varies from:
() School is scary, and intimidating, but you'll do fine as long as you try.
() Everybody you know feels like they're an outcast. It's not on the SAT, but it's one of the most important things you should learn in high school.
() The friends you make on your own, the ones that count, will be with you the rest of your life. Particularly if Facebook is still around, or has inevitably mutated into Skynet.
() I know you loved him/her, but there will be somebody better someday that will make you wonder what in the hell you were thinking.
() You will always...always...think you are lightyears smarter and more savvy than you were 4 years ago.
() God, Country, Family: You keep those as your priorities and everything else will work out.
() For the love of God, use the toilet.
I didn't say these were in any particular order.
Nevertheless, I have hundreds of these things I feel like I need to spew to my future-children like Yoda every time I consider writing here, but I've avoided it in an attempt to not appear pretentious. But, as is obvious from this post, I've decided to give it a try anyway. Perhaps now that I've gotten some of my world wisdom out of me, I can post here more often.
-Tony
P.S. HI FUTURE KIDS! IF YOU'RE READING THIS AND STILL LIVING WITH YOUR MOTHER AND I, COME GIVE US A HUG. IF YOU'RE IN COLLEGE OR GRAD SCHOOL, GIVE US A CALL! IF YOU'RE IN YOUR 50'S, COME TO THE NURSING HOME AND WIPE MY BUTT, AS I'VE BEEN ITCHING FOR WEEKS.

Nathan is 14 months old!
Happy Thanksgiving! Today Nathan is 14 months old! One word I can use to describe Nathan these days is 'busy'! I forgot how completely absorbed that toddlers are in their play. He loves to be outside and play in the sand box, climb on the toddler slide and ride on a tricycle. He can't reach the pedals yet so Mommy pushes him along. He enjoys chewing on chalk but he will also sit down on the ground and mark with it on the driveway. He picks flowers, tries to eat acorns, and will take off running down the sidewalk, swinging his right arm as vigorously as he can!
He is not talking yet but he has a great understanding for what we tell him. He has quickly learned how to climb onto the couch and rocking chair, and that's when he hears "please sit down Nathan" from me. He knows what I'm asking him but he just can't listen, he loves to stand up and be as tall as he can!
On Sunday, 11/20, Nathan's 6th tooth finally came in, on the top right. So he has 4 across the top and 2 on the bottom still. I assume he's still teething because he is always chewing on his fingers and he's been trying to bite me the last few days. He opens his mouth and puts it on my leg or arm and looks at me, as if he's saying "are you gonna let me do this"? Of course I tell him that we have toys for biting and give him one of those.
Nathan loves apples and grapes, and crackers. He still won't eat meat, beans, bread, eggs, most veggies or cheese. Sometimes he will eat yogurt, pasta, or broccoli, but not always. I hope he starts to eat more foods soon, it can be frustrating to feed this kid!

Emma calls Nathan "Buddy" so here's Buddy getting muddy in our yard. We used to have grass but not much of that is left.

Climbing
Nathan is enjoying our small climber and slide in the backyard. He needs a little help getting that leg up but I'm sure he won't need help for long!

Nathan is 13 months old!
Today Nathan is 13 months old! He's such a sweet and happy little toddler! He loves to be outside and play in the sand box, or just walk down the sidewalk. I've been taking the kids for walks in the stroller and he really enjoys it. It's nice to finally have some good weather to be outside.
He's obsessed with getting up on the couch and anytime I sit down, he's crying for me to put him up on the couch. When I do set him up there, he gets the biggest grin and runs to the end, where he tries to dive over the arm rest. I catch him by the ankle before he goes over of course! Most of the time I sit on the floor just to avoid that whole scene. I forgot how exhausting a toddler can be! I can't load or unload the dishwasher if he's awake, and I have to keep all the bathroom doors shut at all times! He loves to play in the tupperware/plastics cabinet in the kitchen, so it's always a mess from him getting the stuff out.
Nathan's interest in solid food seems to be waning. I'm getting a little frustrated with him, he won't even try most foods now. He just pushes it away or smears the food on his tray. I hope this is just a phase and maybe related to the extreme teething pain he's dealing with now. He must have the slowest moving teeth ever! He's got three on the top that have broken through the gum but they aren't fully descended yet. One more is about to break through, and then he'll have 6. Still 14 more teeth to go, and I'm not looking forward to the molars or canines.
Nathan received two ride-on toys for his birthday, and he's really loving them. He is getting really good at getting on and off on his own, and he loves to stand on the seat and point and talk to us. He can make the car go backwards by pushing his feet, but he's not yet discovered how to go forward.
Nathan is learning to brush his teeth. He mostly just chews on the brush but I'm trying to get the routine established of brushing before bedtime. We'll add mornings when he has more teeth!
Nathan is such a snuggler and loves to give hugs! He loves to hug Emma and roll around with her on the floor. He's talking more and more, although he doesn't know any real words yet. His comprehension is great, he understands many of the things we tell him. He's sweet, smart and we love him so much!

Nathan's favorite spot to sit
Nathan loves sitting inside his racetrack spinner. It spins little cars (and other toys!) but he really wants it to spin him around!

Trying to load this video again.
Today Nathan realized he can push the button on the farm toy on the fridge and make the music play! He did it several times and danced around the kitchen!

Nathan's 12 month checkup
Last Tuesday on 9/27 was Nathan's 12 month checkup. He is 29 inches tall (25th percentile for height), 21 pounds and 15 oz (25th-50th percentile for weight), and his head circumference is 48cm (90th percentile). He did very well with the doctor and she said "he's advanced", which we all knew already!
He is really starting to make more sounds and has started to say "da", and "doe". I love to listen to his babbling and wonder what he's thinking. He loves to get into his little red wagon and stand or sit in it. He loves his football and he's really into stealing the phone or TV remote when he can get them!
I'm trying to get Nathan to drink whole milk from a cup. After his first taste he gave me a look of such betrayal! Since then he's refusing to even sip it, he some how knows if the cup has milk or water. He's still not very interested in eating solid food regularly, although tonight he actually ate broccoli and pasta and really loved both!

It's about time!
Finally Nathan's 3rd tooth has cut through his gum! The top left tooth is finally erupting. It seems like these top teeth are taking forever to come in. I could tell the last few days that the pain was really bothering Nathan so I hope this will give him some relief!
