Today was Nathan's 18 month checkup. He weighs 21 pounds, 10 ounces, and is 31 inches tall. His head circumference is 49 cm. This places him in the 10-25th percentile for height, the 5th percentile for weight, and the 75-90th percentile for head circumference.
The doctor is a little concerned with Nathan's weight because he has lost weight since his 15 month checkup. He's actually a little under what he was at his 1 year appointment. But she did acknowledge that he has a very high level of activity, which she noticed during the appointment. He never stops moving, always climbing, running, dancing, moving anyway he can! So for now we are going to just encourage him to eat more protein. He has grown an inch taller so he is definitely growing.
Nathan is a very healthy little guy, and reaching all his milestones for this age. He knows at least 20 words, and few of which I forgot in my last post. He knows "book" and "bug" and just today he has learned "yes" and "please." I'm so glad that he has learned yes and I'm hoping to give him many opportunities to say it instead of his almost constant "no."
Tomorrow I'm going to attempt to get some pictures of the kids in bluebonnets, so keep your fingers crossed they turn out! And a little update on Emma: she recently counted to 100 all by herself!

Grasshopper!
Last night Emma and I were reading a book, Ten Little Ladybugs, and she point to the grasshopper and said "grasshopper"! Her little voice is so sweet, I love to hear her say new things. Here are a few more words and phrases that she's said recently: "car horn", "hurt shoulder", "push baby" (she pushes a smaller child at a playdate recently and keeps talking about it; not sure if she's sorry about it or bragging), "reach moon", and "daddy's work - trains - bubbles". She's still talking about the trains and bubble machine that were at Tony's office over the holidays. She also called a bus a "school bus" today, instead of a "beep-beet".

Happy Birthday Jesus!
Tonight as we put Emma to bed, we read "T'was the Night Before Christmas" to her. Then after I left, Tony read her a book called "What is Christmas About?" He told her about Jesus and that we celebrated Christmas because it's his birthday. She then said several times "Happy Birthday Jesus." It was very sweet! Hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas!

Duck!
Today Emma said duck! It was cute (you're surprised, I'm sure)! She was actually playing with a little soft penguin that she found with a small baby rubber duck. She decided that the penguin was the mommy duck and started saying "Mommy, Mommy, Mommy...duck!"
She also put on pants by herself for the first time today! They are soft cotton pants and she was able to get them on in the right direction, but they were inside out. She pulled them up as much as she could but her diaper bump stopped them in the back.
She really loves to see school buses these days. We see them often when we are taking Daddy to work and picking him up. She says "beep-beet" when she see one. She also loves to sing the song "The Wheels on the Bus". If we see a bus go by she'll ask me "Mommy, beep-beet, me, please?" Which means "Mommy can I see another school bus please?"

No more gates (mostly)!
This weekend I decided that I was sick of the gates dividing our living room and kitchen from the rest of the house. So we took them down, except for the gates on the top and bottom of the stairs. We still have the big fence keeping Emma from the TV, but the two gates being gone is so nice! I feel like our house is bigger and we can move around easier. Emma seems happier to just have the option to go in the other rooms, but mostly she stays where ever we are. She's even stayed out of the little bathroom with the cat box.
This morning I was getting Emma dressed and told her that I had a hoodie for her to wear today. As I pulled it over her head she said "hoodie, Emma's hoodie". Also this morning she very clearly said "Big Bird" when Sesame Street came on and he was on the screen! So there's two new words just in an hour this morning!
She really likes to hold hands, especially when we are in the car. She asks so sweetly, "hold hands?" I love to hold her little baby hand, it's so soft and sweet.

Emma is 23 months old!
Today Emma is 23 months old! She's doing and saying so many things, here a few that I can think of.
-She says "ho ho ho" when you mention Santa Claus or point him out in a picture.
-She loves to play in the dirt and play outside anytime.
-When she sees a horse she says "yeehaw, yeehaw". Sometimes she calls still calls horses "neighs" too.
-She sings Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and the Barney song (I love you, You love me) but she doesn't know all the words, so she just uses her baby speak, it's so cute!
-She loves to watch Caillou, and can now say his name. It's so sweet, to hear her pronounce something with her little baby girl voice.
-She still calls baby bottles "baby bokles"
-She still calls Elmo "Melmo"
-She loves to take a bath, especially bubble baths. She can say bubbles and bath.
-She loves to paint and asks me everyday if she can paint. We don't always paint but we do color everyday.
-She calls her grandmothers both "mom", and my dad is "dad" and Tony's dad is "papaw"
-She can tell me when something hurts, and she says quite often "hurt me" when I try to brush her hair or put it up in a ponytail. Sometimes she will tell me that I hurt her during a diaper change or when she's eating. I think she's just exploring the concept. But sometimes if her pants are too tight, she will tell me they are hurting her. That's helpful to know when she's uncomfortable or hurt by something.
-She loves to look at pictures of our family, and herself. She will ask for "more Emmas" and go to the computer. We sit on the couch and look at all the pictures I have posted online.
-If she wants something but we can't understand what, she will take us by the hand or finger and lead us to it.
-She loves to put on our shoes and attempt to walk in them.
-She wakes up everyday smiling and gives us hugs and kisses. She is a very sweet and loving girl!

Potty Time and Even More Words
Emma has started to use her little potty. She first went pee pee on Nov. 10th. Daddy was present, but Mommy had given up and left the bathroom. Emma was very proud of her success. She's gone a few more times, and now Mommy has decided it's time to get a seat reducer and an extra potty.
The new words and phrases continue to come daily. Here are few: stuck, broke, empty, belt, help, ant, mouse, more (sounds like ma,) pretty, milk, hair, no way, heart, pie and coke. She knows exact what coke is and will demand a drink if she sees anyone drinking it. She also picked up "shoot", from Mommy. Mommy is working on changing that to oops or oh no. It's especially embarrassing when we are around others and Emma will say "shoooooot", drawing out the word. She has also started to say cat, puppy and cow, instead of "mow", "ruff-ruff" and "moo". I am a little sad that she's saying the real animal names, it is so cute to hear her say the animal sounds.
Emma can identity these shapes: heart, circle, triangle, square, and star. She can say heart but she knows the other shapes too. When we are playing outside, I draw the shapes and then ask Emma to run to the star, or the circle, etc, and she always goes to the correct shape.
One of our neighbors a few houses down has some little scarecrow men staked out in her yard. They are about Emma's height, and she is very interested in them. Every time we play outside, Emma has to go over and hug and kiss all three scarecrow men. It's very cute!
All fall we have been showing Emma how to make the Hook 'Em sign with her hands. She knows the Longhorn symbol and will point it out on our T-shirts. Then she grabs her hand and says "help hand", asking for us to help her make the hand sign. She can't hold her fingers in the sign by herself, but she tries! She also knows the sign for mouse and frog. She doesn't use her signs very much anymore, but sometimes she still does.
I know tomorrow she'll say more words and I'll think of others that I forgot to write down. She is really learning so much everyday!

Emma is 22 months old!
Today Emma is 22 months old! She is still learning new words every day, and exploring her world in new ways. She loves to pull out the chairs at the kitchen table and climb up in them. At first I tried to tell her no and keep her off the chairs, but it was a losing battle. So now I can’t leave anything on the table or she will get it. Also, she can reach pretty far onto the kitchen counters and pull stuff off, so I have to keep things away from the edge.
Emma knows the Longhorn sign is Bevo and she tries to do the Hook 'em sign with her fingers. She will say "hand, help", meaning for us to help her make the sign with her hand. She can't hold it but she is trying. She also loves to color and finger paint. She still loves Elmo but Barney is becoming a favorite too.
Some of Emma’s new words are “play”, “happy”, “sit”, “kite”, “bite” and “pap-paw”. She has started to call Grandpa Smith “pap-paw”, or possibly “paw-paw”, sometimes it’s a little hard to understand her. She still calls her grandmothers “mom”. I’m interested to see what she calls Granddad Mangrum the next time she sees him.
Emma has an unusual but still cute habit that I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned here before. She has been doing this for at least the last 3-4 months, if not longer. When we mention the name of someone she knows (but not ourselves) she will make a fist and knock on her head. Yes, she knocks on her head just like she will knock on a door. She knocks herself pretty hard too, we tell her not too but she always does it. If I tell her that her grandparents are coming to visit, she knocks on her head. If I ask her if she wants to play with her friends Lauren and Emily, she knocks on her head. After she knocks, then she’ll get excited and scream or laugh, or make another appropriately happy sound. I hope one day she can tell us just exactly what the knocking of her head means.
If I'm eating something and she wants some, she asks for a "bite". She will ask for a "bite" of banana, instead of wanting to hold the whole thing.
Halloween is in a few days and I will posts pictures of Emma in her costume. I’ll try to post a sneak peak before Saturday. Until then enjoy these short videos of Emma riding the choo choo train at the Elgin Pumpkin festival on Oct. 18. In the 2nd video if you hear a baby crying, that is not Emma. At the end of the 3rd video, you can see Emma sign "more" with her hands.
